So I JUST heard about Hack Library School’s Library Student Day in the Life and I’m a sucker for these types of challenges – back when I used to keep a LiveJournal I’d participate in photo-based day-in-the-life communities. So now I’ll get to blog for five whole days in a row! I also want to do this because I feel like there aren’t a lot of Wayne State students in the library school blogosphere and I want to change that!
I do have an about page on this blog, but I’ll give a brief intro for those who are here just for HLSDITL: I’m Kelly, I’m in the MLIS/Archival Administration certificate program at the School of Library and Information Science at Wayne State University, I work part-time as a graduate student assistant in the Undergraduate Library at Wayne State, this semester I’m doing a mini-practicum at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and I’m research co-chair of Wayne State’s NDSA student group…I think that’s it!

Sometimes I can look fancy
Today was my first day back at work after getting my wisdom teeth removed – I work at the reference desk at the Undergraduate Library at Wayne State. All the GSAs are assigned a mentor who works with them for a couple of hours once a week, assisting them and answering questions that we may have about the reference experience. Today was the day for my mentor, Monique, to come and assist me. It’s a good thing she was there too, because I got a question that I did not know the answer to – a patron wanted to know about the impact factor of a specific journal so I got to learn all about Web of Science and its competitor, Scopus.
It was actually a pretty quiet day in the library – most students are probably studying for midterms, but in a couple weeks I’ll probably get more students looking for resources for their term papers. As for me, I have an assignment due for my Information Architecture class on Wednesday that I really should have been working on, but I kept spacing out – I’m just going to blame that on post-wisdom teeth pain!
I guess I could work on it now, but then I found out about this Library Student Day in the Life thing and I have to catch up on RuPaul’s Drag Race so all work no play something something and so on.
By the way, that picture above? I normally don’t get THAT dressed up for work but since it was my first day back I wanted to fancy it up a little.

Kelly,
I too learned about impact factor last week! Interesting piece of information to know as I too was asked where a student could find that information. Good luck on the blog!
